Have you noticed your dog or cat has started eating grass?

You let them outside, and the next thing you know, they’re munching away like a cow!

Many pet owners take this as a sign their beloved fur baby may be ill.

And although a trip to the vet may be worth it, there are some less sinister reasons why your dog or cat may have started eating grass.

This blog will explain why cats or dogs eat grass, whether it’s safe, and when to visit your vet for a checkup.

Why does a cat eat grass?

Your cat may be eating grass for a variety of reasons. Here are the top 3 reasons:

Hairball removal

Cats love grooming themselves. All this licking of loose hair means they swallow quite a bit!

You’ve probably heard your cat wrenching to try and cough up a hairball. When they can’t remove a hairball, cats eat grass, which induces vomiting. When they vomit, they can remove the stuck hairball so they feel much better.

Cats love to chew

Although they’re not big chewers like dogs, cats may love the feeling of chewing on grass. They may be bored and looking for something new to try or enjoy a texture different from chewing their usual dry or wet food. Grass is often damp or moist, so it may be their way of chewing something soft if you only feed them dry food.

It helps with digestion

You’ve probably never thought about it much, but grass is high in fibre! This added fibre can help your cat’s digestion. Grass is also a natural laxative, so if your cat eats grass, it may indicate that they’re constipated. A bit of grass isn’t harmful and is an excellent way of keeping your cat’s stomach happy and healthy.

Why does a dog eat grass?

Like a cat, your dog may be eating grass for many reasons. Here are the top 3.

Your dog likes it

Dogs eat just about anything, so grass isn’t the exception! You may notice they eat it more during certain times of the year, such as in winter when it’s dewy and cold. Or they may even be looking for extra treats left by the visiting local possums! Many dogs eat grass purely because they love the taste or the texture.

It helps with digestion

Grass is high in fibre and, therefore, great for your dog’s digestive system. Grass keeps harmful bacteria at bay and can help with constipation. Despite common belief, dogs won’t eat grass to vomit (most won’t even vomit). If your dog is showing signs of discomfort along with eating grass, it's time to visit your vet to check for underlying health problems.

It’s a behavioural issue

Your dog may be eating grass purely out of boredom. If it’s been left outside all day and has run out of things to entertain it or food, it may turn to grass. To avoid excess grass eating from boredom, leave your dog loads of chew toys when you head out and take them for a walk to burn off some energy.

Is it safe for your dog or cat to eat grass?

Generally, it’s safe for your dog or cat to eat grass if it’s natural and hasn’t been treated with pesticides, lawn feeders and the like. Here are some tips:

Avoid letting them eat grass in parks, as you don’t know if it’s been treated
Monitor their intake and look for signs of excessive vomiting or diarrhoea,
which may indicate a more significant issue (or too much grass!)
Buy indoor cat grass that you can grow yourself inside and let your cat nibble
away on that during the day

Should I take my dog or cat to the vet if they eat grass?

If you’re concerned about how much grass your dog or cat is eating (especially if it’s a new habit and they can’t get enough), it’s best to visit your local vet for a checkup.

They can perform blood tests to determine if your pet lacks vitamins from its diet (which can often be the case).

Eating grass usually indicates a lack of fibre, so your vet may recommend a high- fibre diet to help stabilise your pet’s digestive system. Fibre is essential to keep harmful bacteria at a minimum level to prevent your dog or cat’s stomach from becoming upset and causing vomiting or diarrhoea.

Is your dog eating grass because it’s bored?

How to arrange custody of your pets when going through a divorce

Divorce isn’t easy.

Emotions are heightened, and it can be challenging to make all the arrangements to separate your life (and everything that goes along with it) from your spouse.

Many people start by separating assets and arranging custody of their children (if they have any).

But there’s another essential family member to consider - your fur baby.

With many families now owning a pet, they become another family member to think about when you’re going through a divorce.

Legally, pets, such as your house, cars, and assets, are considered property. If you can’t agree on custody with your ex-spouse, the courts will treat your pet in the same manner as separating your assets.

This guide will cover the emotions your pet may experience, the change of environment for your pet, custody and visitation rights, and the legal side of pet custody in divorce.

How the change of environment following a divorce may affect your pet

Dogs love stability. Most will have a routine – feeding, walking, sleeping, etc. When this goes out the window, your dog will act out and become stressed.

Ideally, you’ll amicably choose the primary caregiver (i.e., the original owner of the pet or the spouse who can provide and care for the pet in the best manner possible).

If the primary caregiver stays in the property, this is ideal, as your pet can stay in a familiar environment. However, if both parties are moving, you must help your pet adjust to its new surroundings.

The same applies to joint custody, where your pet will move from one house to another. You’ll need to make that process a happy, joyful time for them and try to avoid conflict as you hand over your pet so they don’t pick up on tension.

To help them adjust, you should:

Maintain regular feeding times
Take them on walks to help them explore their new environment
Give them lots of extra attention and help them feel safe
Ideally, stay with them as they adjust so they’re not left alone in a strange place

Negotiating pet visitation and custody following a divorce

Deciding on pet custody and visitation can be tricky when you’ve decided to divorce. Above all things, you should consider what’s in the best interest of your beloved pet and not use them as a pawn in a game of tug and war.

If there’s any dispute, it’s recommended that a pet custody agreement be drafted, including who will be the primary carer, how visitation will occur, and who will be responsible for the ongoing pet costs or care of your pet.

If one party keeps your pet as the primary caregiver and the other spouse wants to see their pet, you’ll need to work out a visitation schedule that works for both parties.

Like other aspects of divorce proceedings, you may use a mediator to help you find a solution that is agreeable to all involved.

You’ll also need to work out who (if not both) will be responsible for ongoing pet care costs and the well-being of your beloved fur baby. As you know, pets can be expensive, and emergencies can happen.

Here are some solutions:

If one party is taking sole responsibility for your pet (i.e. no visitation, etc.), that person will assume the financial and emotional care
If there’s joint custody, both parties could put an agreed amount into an account specifically for pet costs only OR
You could have an agreement (like you do with children) that one spouse will pay the other a certain amount of money to help cover the pet costs

The legalities of pet custody when going through a divorce

If you can’t amicably decide on pet custody, finding a divorce lawyer who knows about pet custody issues is advisable. Australian law considers pets to be property.

If you’re in dispute over your pet, the courts will approach the issue as they’d consider your asset divisions. When looking at your property settlement, they determine each person's financial and non-financial contributions to the marriage, along with your future needs.

When negotiating pet custody, the courts will usually consider:

Your pet’s council registration and microchip (whose name is it under)
Who wanted or bought the pet in the first instance
Who has been responsible for the pet's care (training, feeding, walking, etc.)
Who usually takes the pet to the vet or makes the decisions regarding its care

To avoid hefty court costs, a lawyer usually recommends mediation to help both parties devise an arrangement that suits you and your pet.

Ultimately, when you’re going through a divorce, it’s best that you can both agree on what’s best for your beloved fur baby. Above all, think of what’s best for your pet and put their needs above your own.

Your pet’s emotions during a divorce

Divorce can be very stressful for your pets, especially dogs. Dogs are highly sensitive animals who thrive on routine and are very in tune with your emotions. You may not realise it, but they’re likely to pick up on the tension in the household and will feel it when you’re upset and tense.

You may notice that your dog starts displaying emotional behaviours as a coping method. This includes:

Increased anxiety behaviours or acting out of character
Aggression towards people (especially if they’re yelling) or destructive behaviour around the house
Loss of appetite or constantly begging for more food
Excessive barking or whining, especially when left alone
Withdrawal from their usual fun activities or family members

During this time, you’ll need to give your dog extra love and attention and reassure them they are safe (amongst the chaos that can occur with a divorce).

Most of us love celebrating our birthdays.

It's the day of the year that the attention is on us, and we're made to feel special with our nearest and dearest wishing us all the best (and spoiling us).

So, let me ask you.

Have you ever held a birthday party for your dog?

You should! They're an essential member of your family, and they'd love to be spoilt on their special day.

Besides, it's a great excuse to gather all your friends and family and their fur babies to catch up and celebrate with fun.

This guide will help you throw your dog the best birthday party ever with tips on deciding whether you should have a party, how to host a dog party, where to hold it, dog inspired games and activities and safe dog treats.

Should you hold a birthday party for your dog?

Before you excitedly plan a birthday party for your dog, ask yourself if your dog is well socialised and if they like other dogs (i.e. have they met the other dogs who'll attend)? If your dog is anxious or aggressive towards other dogs, you shouldn't host a party with other dogs – keep it humans only.

This also goes for the dogs you'll invite. Ask the owners only to bring their dog if they know they're good with dogs and won't display aggressive or disobedient behaviour.

It's your dog's special day, and you don't want it ruined by dogs fighting or being scared of each other.

Top tips for hosting a dog birthday party

Here are some tips for hosting your dog's birthday party:

Send out fun invitations (that you make yourself online or buy from a local store)
Visit your local pet store and look for dog-friendly party supplies
Ask other dog owners if their dog has any allergies before you buy snacks to ensure all the dogs will be safe eating the treats
Choose a location for your party
For some added fun, set a theme, and you'll get some fantastic photos (e.g. ask the dogs to come dressed in their party outfit, funny hat, superhero costume, etc.)
Consider the age of the dogs to determine what activities you could include
If your dog is older or appreciates some quiet time, consider hosting the party at home so your dog can curl up for a nap when they're ready

Where to hold your dog's birthday party

When deciding where to hold your dog's birthday, here are some options:

Your home – do you have enough space inside and outside to hold people and their dogs? If you're hosting at home, remember that you may have accidents and ask the dog owners to be responsible for cleaning up after their dog.
A local dog park – ensure all the dogs you've invited are socialised and can handle the possibility of other dogs running around. Other dogs may crash your party, so where possible, try to keep your party in one section of the park.
The beach – if it's beautiful weather, you may consider a beach party. Make sure you choose a time when dogs are permitted off-leash on the beach so they can run around, play in the water, and sit with you in the sand for their treats.

Dog inspired party games and activities

The type of party games you choose to play will depend on your dog's age and health. Also, be mindful of the other dogs you've invited.

Here are some ideas:

Set up an agility course and let the dogs take turns one by one
Play fetch and see who gets the ball/frisbee the fastest
Tug of war between dogs and owners (see who gets pulled over the line first by their dog)
Sprinkler runs (if it's summer, turn on the sprinkler and let them play in the water)
Go on a group walk, then let them run around at a local dog-friendly park
Hide and seek the treat (hide treats around and let the dogs sniff them out – only if they're not food aggressive as you don't want fights)

You could also have prizes like dog toys and treats to give to the 'winner' of the games.

If you are having dog activities, be mindful that you'll need lots of water around for them to rehydrate. Big plastic bowls can be used, topped up regularly and then thrown away after the party (if you don't want to keep dog slobber bowls!).

Safe dog birthday treats

It wouldn't be a party without birthday treats!

Remember to ask other dog owners about any allergies. It's always best to give any treats to the owner and let them feed their dog.

Healthy dog treats are usually all-natural, so most dogs happily tuck into them. Look for dried meat products or snacks with no additives, fillers or grains.

Most pet stores will have a range to choose from. You'll also find doggy biscuits designed for parties (fun for an occasional treat!).

If you want a cake, you could make a meat cake (like a meatloaf) and serve it to your dog and doggy guests.

Other ways to spoil your dog on their birthday without a party

If you don't want to host a party, as the thought of entertaining people and multiple dogs doesn't sound like fun, spending the day with your dog alone is excellent.
Go on a car ride to the beach or park for a walk
Have a doggie pamper session (brush, bath, nails, massage etc.)
Spend the day snuggled on the couch watching movies and giving them their favourite snacks
Give them a gift like a new toy, a coat or a bone

They're so tiny and cute. All you want to do is cuddle and spoil them.

That's a natural reaction!

But puppies need a lot of care and training from a young age to become well-behaved adult dogs.

If you're new to the world of puppy training, it may seem like a daunting task. But let me assure you that it's 100% necessary and not as complicated as it first may sound.

With the right approach, tips and tricks, puppy training can be a fun and rewarding experience for you and your new little fur baby.

Let's explore.

Quick puppy training facts all pet owners need to know

Start puppy training early (between 8–12 weeks old) after they've had their vaccinations
Don't punish your puppy for bad behaviour, and always use positive reinforcement training
Keep the same commands (and make sure everyone in the house uses the same ones)
Always use the same puppy treats that they love
Incorporate play and games into your training sessions
Be consistent with your puppy training
If bad behaviour continues despite training, consider speaking to your vet or a professional dog trainer

1. Puppy training turns your dog into a happy, confident adult

Start socialising your puppy early! It's one of the best things you can do to teach your puppy about the world, helping them become aware of their surroundings, things that can happen and to feel comfortable. When puppies aren't socialised with humans or other dogs, they may become aggressive, fearful or anxious when they're adults.

HINT: Puppy classes are a great way to socialise your puppy. It's also best to include them doing things with you each day.

For example, if you arrive home from work and your (now adult) dog jumps all over you, it may be because you encouraged this as a puppy with lots of cuddles. So, in this instance, start early to teach your puppy that they'll get attention when they are sitting or calm and then give them positive reinforcement of this behaviour that you'd find acceptable when they're an adult.

It's no secret that puppies can get destructive when they're bored. Puppy training becomes fun for all involved, and your puppy will love the distraction and mental stimulation. But, as soon as you see your puppy getting frustrated or starting to ignore you, end the training session to keep it a fun experience.

Start puppy training early as they'll absorb everything in their first few months – expose them to life experiences and take them out with you.
Use positive reinforcement with puppy training, rewarding them with treats, praise and affection for good behaviour.
Stay consistent with puppy training, especially with your routine (feeding, walking & training) and ensure everyone does the same thing.
Start socialising with your puppy and expose them to people, animals, and environments (sights, sounds, and adventures) to prevent adult behavioural problems.
Keep puppy training sessions short to match your puppy's attention span (5- 10 minutes several times a day will help your puppy stay focused and engaged).
Teach your puppy basic commands like sit, stay and come as essential words to communicate with your puppy.

How to create a backup plan for your pet sitter

Let's chat about holidays.

They're the best, aren't they?

We spend so much time planning and plotting, and we get more and more excited the closer they get.

You get everything organised—accommodation, airfares (sometimes!) booked, time off work and your animal's care entrusted to your family members, a local shelter or your favourite pet sitter.

But what happens if one tiny part of your plan fails?

I don't mean getting to the airport late and missing your plane (although that is bad!). I'm talking about the carer for your fur baby suddenly being unavailable.

Why would my pet sitter cancel my appointment?

Trust me, cancelling your pet-sitting arrangement wouldn't be something most pet sitters do on a whim!

But as you know, life happens – to all of us.

Your pet sitter may have had an unexpected family situation arise, they may have fallen ill, or they may have had an accident which prevents them from working.

As a pet sitter entrusted with caring for multiple fur babies around Glen Iris, I have formed strong bonds with families and their animals. Cancelling an appointment isn't something I'd take lightly, and I'm sure many other pet sitters are the same.

So, what do you do if you find yourself in this situation?

What should you do if your pet sitter cancels your arrangement?

Firstly, don't panic!

No one wants to ruin your holiday plans, and pet sitters genuinely care about your pets as much as you do. They don't want to see you or your fur baby stressed out.

Most pet sitters will have a backup in place and offer you suggestions:

Pet-sitting organisations

If you've booked a pet sitter through an organisation, they will find you another pet sitter for the period you've booked. Most have multiple sitters on hand, so finding a new sitter shouldn't be an issue. You may wish to meet them first and ensure your pet is comfortable with someone new.

Solo pet sitters

If your pet sitter works for themselves and needs to cancel, they'll do what they can to help you find a new sitter. Many local pet sitters bond over their love of animals and their jobs so they can call on each other to help out when in need. Some may even have family members willing to care for your pet while you're away.

Family pet sitters

There's not a great deal of backup if a family member lets you down! You could do a quick ring around of other family members or contact a local, professional pet sitter to see if they can care for your pets.

Give your pet sitter a backup plan too!

Touch wood so that nothing happens to your pet sitter while you're away, but it could happen. It's essential to:

Leave your pet sitter your emergency contact details so they can contact you and let you know what's happening
Have a pre-planned backup in place:
Would you like them to find another agency sitter?
Should they call on their friends/family/colleagues to help?
Do they call one of your relatives?

Ultimately, you want to go on holidays with peace of mind, knowing that your fur baby is in good, kind and caring hands no matter what happens.

Everything you need to know about registering your dog or cat in Victoria

With April being pet registration month (your annual registration fees are due on the 10th of April), I thought it was a good time to chat about all things pet registration.

Did you know that every dog or cat over 3 months of age must be registered with your local council in Victoria? It's a legal requirement under the Domestic Animals Act 1994 .

As a pet owner, it's your responsibility to ensure you register your dog or cat with your local council.

And despite being fined if you don't, there are many benefits to registering your pet in Victoria, which we'll cover in this guide.

Read on to discover why pet registration is essential, what to do if you've moved house, pet registration fees and how to register multiple pets in Victoria.

Why it's essential to register your dog or cat in Victoria

When you register your dog or cat with your local council in Victoria, they're given a unique (lifetime) pet tag with a number. If your pet ever escapes, this tag helps the animal management staff to locate you and return your pet.

Paying your annual pet registration fee also helps to:

Provide local facilities like dog parks, dog poo bags and bins and pounds or shelters.
Create community events or incentives such as pet expos, discounted microchip and desexing days and discount incentives for new pet registrations.
Give training courses and tools to your local animal management staff who attend to nuisance complaints, rescue stray animals, manage shelters, etc.
Cover staff who work with Domestic Animal Businesses (pet shops, breeders, boarding kennels, catteries, etc.) to ensure they are compliant with the mandatory codes of practice for animal welfare.
Cover specialist staff who are trained in dangerous and restricted dog management and keep a database that tracks these dogs.
Cover the cost of dog bite and dog attack education programs and provide the local community with free dog bite prevention education.
Support your local emergency animal welfare centres to ensure they have enough cages, food, bedding, bowls, etc., to care for the animals that come into their facility.
Identify where your pet may have been stranded if you've had to evacuate your premises in an emergency.

How to register your pet with a new council when you move house

When you're moving house, it's easy to forget all the organisations you need to contact to update your details.

But don't forget about your pets!

If you move house, you'll need to contact your new council to register your dog or cat with them. If it's the same council, you'll still need to update your address so they know where your pet lives.

You can either do this at the annual renewal stage (April), but it's best to do it straight away.

Most councils will take into consideration that you've paid the previous council's pet registration fees and either waive the fee until the following year or charge you a pro-rate amount (if the fees differ between councils).

Also, remember to update your pet's microchip details so if they're ever lost, they'll know where to find you.

Dog and cat registration fees in Victoria

Your local council sets dog and cat registration fees in Victoria. Although they are pretty affordable, you'll be eligible for discounts if your pet is:

Desexed
Over 10 years of age
A working dog
Used for breeding by the owner of a registered domestic animal business
Obedience trained with a certificate issued by a Government approved organisation
A microchipped dog who is registered with the GMA

You will also receive a discount if:

You hold an approved concession card issued by the Department of Social Services or Veterans Affairs
You're a registered foster carer of animals

Another way to receive a discount is to be a member of an organisation approved by the Minister, including:

Australian National Cats Inc
Dogs Victoria
Feline Control Council (Victoria) Inc
Master Dog Breeders & Associates
Responsible Pet Breeders Australia
The Governing Council of the Cat Fancy Australia and Victoria Inc

How to register multiple pets in Victoria

If you own multiple pets, you will need to register each one individually with your local council.

Each council will have a maximum number of pets that you're allowed to keep on your property at one time, so it's best to check these requirements prior to purchasing more pets.

These restrictions are in place to ensure the welfare of your pets (e.g. you're not living with a multitude of cats that you can't feed, so they annoy the neighbours for food!).

The council need to check that your pets are:

Keep in a healthy environment
Not a nuisance to your neighbours

Final thoughts on dog and cat registration in Victoria

How to stop your cat from pooping in your bathtub

On a recent house-sitting job, I noticed that their gorgeous cat had decided to use their bathtub as a litter tray.

And although your first reaction may be, 'Gross, why's my cat suddenly pooping in the bathtub?', it's important to note that this behaviour isn't overly unusual.

Yes, it's frustrating, smelly, and not ideal if you're the one cleaning it up, but if your cat is pooping in the bathtub, know you're not alone!

Cats are known for being meticulously tidy creatures, regularly grooming themselves to stay clean. So, if your cat has started leaving you 'gifts' in your bathtub, it's their way of telling you something's wrong in their world.

Let's explore the reasons behind cats using a bathtub as a litter tray.

The top 3 reasons why cats poop in your bathtub

Usually, when a cat starts pooping in your bathtub, it can come down to 3 reasons:

Your cat may be experiencing stress

Cats are highly sensitive little creatures, so when something new happens in their world, they can experience stress. This may be things like moving house, their owners being away or having a change in work schedule, or a new baby or pet being introduced to the home.

When your cat is stressed out or anxious, they may act out of character and forget their training. Cats also like privacy, so if they feel their litter tray is in a busy place, this will add to their stress levels, and they won't want to use it.

Your cat may have underlying health issues

If your cat has underlying health problems, they may avoid using their litter tray for a couple of reasons – they either didn't make it there in time, want to show you their pain in person, or they associate their litter box with pain.

Underlying health issues may include gastrointestinal problems, cystitis (inflammation of the bladder), bladder stones or constipation. Older cats may also have cognitive issues (e.g. dementia), causing them to be a little disoriented and pooping in places other than their litter box.

If pooping in the bathtub is a new thing for your cat, and you hear them making lots of noises when trying to pee or poop, it's time to take them to your vet for a check-up.

Your cat has issues with their litter box

It's no secret that cats love a clean litter box that's in a private space away from foot traffic and noises. If your cat is feeling unsafe, this may be a reason they're avoiding their tray and opting for a quieter place like your bathroom.

If you've recently changed their litter tray, moved it or are using a new cat litter, these may all be reasons why they're avoiding it. Pooping in the bathtub is their way of telling you they don't like the changes.

And, if you're not cleaning their tray often enough, they will avoid using it as they don't want to get their little feet dirty!

How to stop your cat from pooping in the bathtub

No one wants their cat constantly pooping in the bathtub. So, here are some ways that you can help your cat transition back to using their litter tray and stop using your bathtub as their toilet.

1. Change their litter box situation

A litter tray should be around 1.5 times the size of your cat. If the tray is too small, they won't feel comfortable using it.

If the tray is in a noisy location, move it to a quieter position in your house or try using a covered litter tray.

Make sure their cat litter is cleaned 2 or 3 times a day (scooping out poop and pee patches) and clean it thoroughly at least once a week.

Get another litter tray, so your cat has 2 options. This is also important if you've introduced another cat, as both cats need to feel like they've got their own tray, as many won't want to share – especially if one has dirtied a tray.

2. Things to avoid

Where possible, don't place your cat's litter tray near where they eat or drink. As cats are sensitive, they may not appreciate their 'toilet' and 'meals area' being in the same place!

Some cats also will be put off by noise or movement in their litter tray. For example, an automatic opening flap or the noise of an auto-cleaning function may be enough to put them off. To avoid this, use an open tray that your cat can easily walk in and out of.

3. Put some water in the bathtub

A handy trick to prevent your cat from jumping into the bathtub is to pop in the plug and fill the bath with water (just enough to cover the base).

This is usually enough to act as a preventative measure to stop your cat from using the bathtub as their litter tray. However, they may love playing in it!

Do you need someone to check in on your cat during the day?

If you can't be home during the day, or you're going away, it's worth considering having a pet sitter (me!) pop in and visit your cat (or other animals).

Is a dog collar, harness, or slip lead better for walking your dog?

As a professional dog walker, my clients often ask me, 'Should I use a collar, harness or slip lead to walk my dog?'.

But as with all things dog-related, my answer is never cut and dry as it will always depend on the dog itself.

It all comes down to your dog’s breed, activity and training levels. Plus, it needs to feel comfortable for your dog and you as their handler.

For example, if you've got an overly active dog who continually pulls on their lead when walking, you may wish to consider a harness to prevent choking, or a slip lead for training. However, if your dog is calm and trots happily beside you, a regular collar and lead would work well.

To help you decide, this handy guide will reveal the top pros and cons of each form of dog walking device.

A quick tip about dog walking

No matter what you choose to use, there are many benefits of taking your dog out for regular walks (daily is best!). If you find your dog is difficult to walk, it may be because they’re not comfortable with the lead, harness or collar you're using.

Sometimes, it can be trial and error (and training) to work out what works best for you and your dog.

Don't give up!

What is a dog slip lead, and how does it work?

A slip lead is designed to easily slip around your dog's neck. Once around their neck, you gently pull on the lead to tighten the loop, so it fits well. The stopper on the lead will prevent the loop from opening (so your dog can't escape you), but you do need to be able to fit 2 fingers between the lead and your dog’s neck.

The pros of slip leads for dogs

It's super easy to use as it slides over your dog's neck
It makes getting a lead on a difficult dog a lot easier
It's a fast and safe way to control a dog quickly (they're often used in shelters or by animal control officers)
They work well for dog shows as they're less noticeable and demonstrate the obedience of the dog as the handler has less interference
They are great for training your dog how to walk calmly on a lead (e.g. the loop tightens if they pull too much, so they learn to walk with you)

The cons of slip leads for dogs

Like a choke chain, if you pull too hard to correct your dog on a walk, they'll associate this with an unpleasant feeling and may start to refuse to wear the slip lead or want to go on walks
If they feel a tightening of the lead around their neck when they're doing something fun, like sniffing or greeting a dog or human, they may start to associate this with a negative experience
There's a risk of choking or gagging if they continue to pull too hard, which in turn will make them feel anxious about wearing the slip lead
These leads may lead to fur wearing out or risk damaging your dog's larynx, thyroid gland, arteries or nerves with prolonged choking pressure in the neck area

Using a regular dog collar for walking

I bet that one of the first things you bought your dog was a cute little collar. Because

of this, your dog will be used to wearing it and all you’ll need to do is attach the lead

and head outside for a walk.

But is this the best option for your dog? Let's explore.

The pros of walking your dog with a collar

Your dog is easy to control, which is great when you're training them
As your dog is likely to be already wearing a collar, they are convenient to use by simply clipping on a lead
Collars have a metal ring where you can attach their ID and your contact numbers (in case they happen to get away from you or escape from your yard)
You can choose a cool and fashionable collar to style it up when you step out for your walk

The cons of walking your dog with a collar

If your dog is constantly pulling, they can injure their windpipe and restrict their airflow
Dogs with heads as big as their necks (e.g. pugs or whippets) can slip out of a collar more easily
If your dog has glaucoma, eye, neck or spinal injuries, you should avoid a collar when walking as it may antagonise their injuries
Small toy breeds (toy poodles, chihuahuas, etc.) are best not to walk with a collar and lead due to their smaller necks and windpipes

Should you use a dog harness for dog walking?

If you can't use one of the other walking devices, a dog harness may be your best option. They’re highly recommended for small dogs, or dogs with existing spinal, eye or neck conditions. They’re also brilliant if you’ve got an overly excitable dog who’s happiness to be outside makes your walk a lot more full on than it needs to be!

The pros of a dog harness for walking

It gives you greater control over an excitable dog
It fits safely and securely around your dog's body, so the pressure is dispersed over a larger surface
Dogs are less likely to be able to slip out of a harness, and they're less inclined to jump up when wearing a harness
Pulling is decreased, which helps alleviate stress on the neck and joints

The cons of a dog harness for walking

They take more time to fit onto your dog, which is hard if you've got an excitable dog who's keen to get out for a walk
Your dog may find it too bulky and uncomfortable compared to a regular collar (so they can't wear them for extended periods)
You usually can't attach an ID tag in case your dog escapes
If your dog wears a coat in the cooler months, it may be harder to fit the harness over the top

Everything you need to know about taking your dog to the beach

There's nothing better than a summer's day when you bundle into the car and head

to the beach. Whether you're going for a walk, for fun, or just to chill out, there's

something magical about the sound of the waves lapping upon the sand.

And when you're heading to the beach this summer, don't forget to take your dog!

Most dogs love a day trip to the beach. It's a place they can run and play, cool off

and spend time with you.

But, if you've never taken your dog to the beach before, there are a few things you

need to know to make it an enjoyable day (for you and your dog).

This handy guide will cover my top tips for keeping your dog safe on their first (or

second or third) trip to the beach.

The top 7 tips for taking your dog to the beach this summer

Before you hit the sand and water with your fur baby this summer, here are my top

tips to prepare for a fun day out.

1. Choose a dog-friendly beach

Before you hit the beach, look up the local council rules to make sure you're

allowed to take your dog. Some beaches will have set times for dogs to play

freely on the beach (off-leash), others may have set on-leash only times, and

some may have free access without restrictions.

Another thing to consider is how your dog will react at an off-leash beach. For

example, will they:

Return to you when you call
Play nicely with other dogs without being aggressive
Get startled if another dog comes running at them
Enjoy the open space, or will the look of the vast water frighten them
Be calm and stay with you rather than running over to little children or

2. Check the beach for dangerous items

One of the unfortunate things about a beach is that people can often leave

things lying around or buried in the sand. Once you've chosen the spot you're

going to set up on the beach, do a quick comb-over of the sand to check for

any dangerous items that may harm you or your dog.

Look for items such as:

Broken glass
Used needles
Rocks or coral
Fishing hooks or wire
General rubbish (e.g. leftover food, discarded cigarette butts etc.)

3. Make sure your dog can swim (and be prepared to go with them)

Some dogs take to the water like a duck! They'll run in and instinctively know

how to paddle away to keep themselves afloat (dogs like Labs are brilliant at

this!). But not all dogs can swim, so you shouldn't assume your dog will know

how to.

Before you go to the beach, you could take your dog to local dog swimming

lessons, or if you've got a pool, take them in with you. If you're unsure if your

dog can swim:

Keep them on a leash
Go in the water with them, holding them as they go in
Don't force it on them (some dogs are scared of vast amounts of water)
Encourage them to stay close to you, using a ball for a game of fetch in

4. Don't go in the water if it's too choppy

Depending on the beach you choose, you may find the water is too choppy

for your dog (or you) to swim safely. Bayside beaches tend to be a lot calmer.

Beaches can become choppy with rips and tides, larger waves and boats or

jet skis whizzing past. You'll also need to keep an eye out for boarders who

may be surfing the waves (you don't want your dog knocked out by an

unsuspecting surfer coming down from a wave!).

If your dog is a beginner, opt for a calmer, bayside beach, and if needed,

pop them in a dog life vest to help keep them afloat.

5. Take fresh water, a shade tent & remember the sunscreen

One thing is almost guaranteed when you're at the beach – your dog is going

to try and drink the salt water. It's in your best interest to stop them doing this,

as they'll end up with diarrhoea and an upset stomach if you don't.

To overcome this, make sure you've got an ample supply of fresh water for

them to drink. Remember to take a bowl or pick up a doggy travel bottle

that's filled with fresh water.

To stay SunSmart, you should also:

Remember that dogs can also get sunburnt (and skin cancer), so apply
Pop a sun shirt on your dog (especially if they have light skin or short hair)
Attend the beach in the cooler parts of the day
Protect their paws from hot sand with dog booties
Take a shade tent, so you've got a safe space for them to relax with you

6. Wash off your dog afterwards

Take extra towels! Your dog is going to be a bit messy after the day at the

beach. Even if they haven't swam in the salt water, they'll be covered with

sand and any other beach messes they've picked up (e.g. rolling in

seaweed!).

Many beaches will have a tap to rinse off, or you can take some extra bottles

of water. Rinse your dog off and towel them dry. If you don't want a wet dog

in your car, make sure you bathe them as soon as you get home, but give

them a quick brush over before you leave the beach to remove excess sand.

If left on your dog for too long, sand and salt may cause skin irritation,

especially if your dog's skin is sensitive, which will make them super itchy.

7. Pick up their poop

As you would when you're out walking, you must take some doggy poop

bags to pick up after your dog. Some beaches may have these handy in the

carpark or at the entrance to the beach, so keep an eye out for them.

Not only is doggy poop yuck for anyone to step in at the beach, but if it's left,

it may become an issue for fish and wildlife. So, pick up their poop and do

your part to help keep our beaches clean for preventable water and soil

contamination.

Dogs & dehydration: The warning signs to look out for

Some days, it's hard to believe that summer has arrived again (typical Melbourne!), but the weather experts are predicting that we're in for a hot one this year.

As a dog owner, walker and sitter, I'm always very conscious of the effect of heat and sun on my pets and those I care for. And in my experience, dogs can overheat very quickly, leading to dehydration.

So, as the weather is starting to warm up, I felt it was a great time to share information about dehydration in dogs – what it is, the causes, the symptoms and what to do if you spot the signs of dehydration in your dog.

What is dehydration in your dog?

Dehydration in your dog occurs similarly to that of humans. The water levels in your body are depleted, so your body starts to draw excess water from your cells. As a result, you'll feel drained and sluggish.

What causes dehydration in dogs?

Like humans, dogs can become dehydrated in various ways:

A bout of vomiting or diarrhoea often caused by food intolerance, sensitive gut issues or underlying medical conditions
Not drinking enough water (or having access to cool, clean drinking water), especially during prolonged periods of heat
Extreme heat waves (although even one hot day is enough to cause dehydration)
Excessive sweating or overheating (that's why it's best not to do strenuous physical activity on hot days)
Medical conditions (or some medications) that cause your dog to urinate more than usual
Prolonged bleeding (e.g. if they injure themselves and bleeding isn't controlled quickly)

What are the symptoms of dehydration in your dog?

Luckily for us as owners, our dogs will usually display symptoms of dehydration that are easy enough for us to pick up on.

The symptoms of dehydration in your dog can include:

Excessive panting or fast yet short breathing
A dry nose and mouth, often with white gums
An altered consciousness level with slower than normal responses and activity levels
A decrease in their need to urinate, and when they do, it may be darker than usual and have an odour about it
Loss of balance when they stand with a shaky walk and possible loss of function in their rear legs
Sunken or dry-looking eyes with a dull film over their corneas
A loss of appetite or no desire to stand up and come to you for food or treats
A weak pulse to feel but a rapid heart rate

How to help your dog if they're suffering from dehydration

For mild dehydration (only showing 1 or 2 symptoms):

Move them to a quiet, cool place in your home, away from any activities that will further excite them
Encourage them to drink water and stay with them to watch they do
If they don't drink water, try some ice blocks to entice them

For extreme dehydration (showing 2 or more symptoms):

Move them to a quiet, cool place in your home (as above)
Hydrate them slowly, so their body doesn't overcompensate – sip slowly, not gulping down the water
If you have a cooling mat, place your dog on this
Take them to the vet as a matter of priority

How to help prevent dehydration in your dog at home

During the warmer months, your dog must always have access to loads of clean, cool drinking water.

Here are some ways you can help prevent dehydration in your dog:

Use larger drinking bowls or have multiple ones left around your home/yard, especially if you're out during the day
Allow your dog to stay inside in a cool house or have plenty of shaded areas outside if they must be out during the heat of the day
Pop some ice cubes in their drinking water to keep the water cool and act as a fun way to attract your dog to drink more water (they love playing with ice blocks!)
Provide drinking fountains that offer a continuous supply of fresh water
If you're travelling in the car, take travel bottles and bowls so you can refuel your dog on the journey
Avoid excessive exercise on hot days, and if you want to go for a walk, make it short and go during the cooler parts of the day
Offer your dog wet food as an added measure of getting more fluid into their little body

If you're a dog owner, there's no doubt you've seen the amount of rawhide dog treats available to buy. They're featured in every pet shop, and you'll often find them as treats in Christmas dog stockings.

Rawhide treats have long been promoted as a great way to entertain your dog as they chew happily for hours.

And while there are some benefits of rawhide dog treats, many pet owners don't know they aren't everything they're made out to be.

In this guide, you'll discover the benefits of rawhide treats, along with the hidden dangers, so you can make an informed decision on whether a rawhide chew toy is suitable for your dog.

How is a dog rawhide treat made?

Rawhide is made from leftovers from the leather industry (from cow hides or other animals that have been used). Here's what happens:

The hide is placed in brine to help slow its decay (it still rots, but this process makes it slower).
The brined hide is shipped to tanneries to strip off the fat and hair using highly toxic chemicals.
More chemicals are used to puff up the hide to split the layers (the outer layer being used to make leather goods like shoes & the inner layer being used for rawhide treats, gelatin and glue).
A solution of hydrogen and peroxide (and other chemicals) is used to remove the smell from the hide (as it's rotting leather).
The rawhide is coloured and basted with flavours to make them look attractive.
When completed, the rawhide chew is preserved with chemicals and made into shapes like rolls and bones (often using glue to hold this shape).

As you've just discovered, a dog rawhide chew undergoes a heavily chemical laden process to become an attractive chew toy for your dog. Even if the rawhide treat is promoted as 'natural', it's best to check the ingredient label carefully.

Besides your dog ingesting harmful chemicals, here are a couple more reasons why rawhide is bad for your dog:

If your dog swallows a broken piece of rawhide, it may become stuck in their throat, acting as a choking hazard
Rawhide is indigestible, so when swallowed, it can stay for long periods in your dog's stomach, causing gastrointestinal issues and potential blockages
To ensure your dog doesn't choke, it's best always to supervise your dog when they're chewing on a rawhide treat.

The benefits of dog rawhide toys and treats

If your dog loves rawhide treats and you're willing to supervise them while they're chewing, you will see there are some benefits. But please, buy good quality ones (not cheap imports) and read the label very carefully.

Rawhide treats continue to be a popular choice as a dog chew toy as they do offer some benefits, including:

Improving the dental health of your dog – as the rawhide is chewed and becomes wet, it wraps on your dog's teeth and rubs off plaque buildup
Saves your household items – when your dog has a toy to chew on, they tend to leave your shoes, furniture and other items alone
Relieves puppy teething pain – gnawing on a rawhide treat helps your puppy's teeth come through, eases pain and strengthens their jaw

What are the alternatives to dog rawhide chews?

There are many fantastic alternatives to rawhide chews that your dog will love just as much.

The best alternatives to dog rawhide chews include:

A raw meaty bone gives your dog essential protein, calcium and minerals as well as being great for their dental health
Hard toy bones that are specifically designed not to break down but give your dog hours of chewing entertainment while strengthening its jaw, neck and shoulder muscles
Dried meat products that are natural, dehydrated meat your dog can chew on
Manufactured dental chews for dogs that are made from non-toxic ingredients (read the label on the product)

Firstly, are you open to rescuing a dog from a shelter?

A quick warning about spotting a dodgy pet breeder or scammers

Dodgy pet breeders and scammers are rife on the internet. They prey on the emotions of people excitedly trying to buy their dream puppy.

And unfortunately, many of them have become 'experts' at scamming people! Their ads are set up meticulously, often replicating genuine breeders, except using their phone number or email address.

One of the best ways to spot a scammer is if they ask you for up-front payment via a money transfer before they transport the pet to you. Next, they'll return and ask for more money as transport costs are higher.

Once they have your money – they disappear.

The top questions to ask a dog breeder to judge they're authentic

The last thing you want is to get scammed when your heart's set on buying a new puppy or dog.

Here are the top questions I recommend you ask your chosen dog breeder:

Can you visit their premises, meet the parents and pick up your puppy? While you're there, look at how the animals are cared for too – are they happy and healthy with clean living spaces?
Are the puppies given lots of human attention or caged up with little interaction? Puppy-farmed breeds often have various psychological and health issues you want to avoid.
Can you see the parent's pedigree papers (if you're buying a legit purebred) and check these with the relevant authorities in your State?
Will your puppy come with a microchip certificate, a record of worming, flea and tick treatments, and a vaccination record?
Can you talk to others who have previously bought a puppy from them?
Are there any known genetic diseases from the parents of your puppy?
What diet are they used to (so you know if/how you can gradually adjust their diet to suit you)?
Can you take your current dog to meet the puppy to see if they tolerate each other? You don't want your dog to be aggressive or overly jealous of a new puppy.

Reputable breeders will happily answer your questions and have no hesitation in meeting you and introducing you to their puppies and parent dogs.

And trust your gut instinct. If an online ad doesn't feel right, it may not be.

How do you decide if you should euthanise your pet and make that end-of-life call

This isn't a topic that's easy to discuss, as it's something that none of us really want to consider. Our pets are a massive part of our lives and become family members (often the ones who show you the most love!).

So, deciding to euthanise your dog or cat may be one of the hardest things you'll ever have to do.

Whether it's from an illness, cancer, old age or an emergency, there may come a time when it's left up to you to make the call.

In an ideal world, our fur babies would live forever!

Or maybe they'd magically go to sleep one night and decide to slip away on their own terms.

But most pets seem to be so stubborn and resilient.

And that's where you'll find that the decision to euthanise your pet will come down to you as their owner.

How will I know it's time to euthanise my dog or cat (from a medical point of view)

Your local vet will be there to guide you on your pet's health. But unless your pet is in dire straits (e.g. had an accident or is obviously suffering), they won't usually tell you to euthanise it.

Instead, they'll give you all the operation, medication or alternative therapy options to try and improve your pet's health or condition.

Ultimately, a vet will leave the decision to end your pet's life to you. But please know, they won't judge your decision as they understand you want what's best for your fur baby.

Vets will tell you the obvious signs to look for to help you determine if you should euthanise your pet:

No longer eating or drinking
Not being able to hold their bladder or bowels
Sleeping for longer periods than normal
Preferring to be alone (e.g. walking away from your family)
Showing signs of distress like excessive whimpering
A loss of enjoyment in their usual daily routines (walks, playtime, etc.)
They're on all the medication, and there's no improvement in their health
Your pet's age and prognosis outlook

But what happens when your pet doesn't fall into these categories?

A real story from a pet owner who had to choose to euthanise her dog

Deciding to let go of Mr Max (my 18-year-old Spoodle) was the most challenging, most heartbreaking thing I've had to do. He'd been by my side through all my ups and downs and was the only constant in my life who always showed unconditional love.

For over 5 years, we'd had monthly pet visits for his arthritis injections and a range of other daily drugs to keep him ticking along. Every 'senior' blood test showed all his organs working perfectly.

Then it happened. His spine reached the point where his back legs wouldn't support him properly, and he started the old man limp.

But...

He was eating and drinking, wouldn't leave my side and was happy to greet anyone who came over. That was typical of Max – he thought he was a human and was always so happy and loving.

And because I was the human he'd protected for so long, he wouldn't want to make me sad by showing his obvious pain.

But watching him struggle brought tears every night. And this happened for a week. Ultimately, I knew it was going to be up to me.

So, how did I decide to euthanise my beloved dog who'd been with me for so long:

I spoke to friends who'd experienced the pain of euthanising their pet
I looked into Max's eyes and spoke to him – it sounds weird, but it's like we had an understanding that we both knew it was time
I spoke to our family, so everyone had input, and I didn't feel so alone
I decided I had to put him before me

Honestly, I'd have kept him until he had wheels for legs and was wearing nappies, but I also knew that wasn't his best life. I'd be selfishly keeping him for me. He'd given me 18 years – it was my time to help him.

My heart broke into a million pieces, but I know he will always be by my side and enjoying life over that rainbow bridge.

How do you euthanise a pet?

You know your pet the best, and regardless of their age, you must trust that you're making the right decision.

Grief, pain and guilt may prolong your decision-making, but once your heart catches up with your head, you'll know it's the right choice.

To euthanise your pet, you can choose to:

Go to the vet clinic (which some people will need to in an emergency)
Ask your vet to visit your home (if they can)
Find a home service where a specialist vet visits your home ( Paws at Peace comes highly recommended as a local provider who makes it a very peaceful experience)

Following your pet's passing, you can:

Ask the vet to take care of their remains
Choose to bury them in your backyard or a special family space
Arrange for pet cremation

Here's how it usually works:

1. Your pet is given a sedative as an injection in the back of their neck.

a. Most won't realise as they'll be too busy eating the snacks you're giving them.

b. Their senses go into overdrive, so they'll want all the snacks rapid-fire!

c. Then they'll slow down and fall asleep.

d. They are peaceful, not in pain, and can hear you and feel your pats, cuddles and kisses.

2. When you're ready, the vet will place a catheter in their leg to inject the final drug (like having an OD of an anaesthetic).

a. It takes around 30 seconds, but your pet's heart gently stops, and their breathing and brain function.

b. During this time, they'll still be aware of your touch and voice so you can say your final goodbyes (if you can through the tears!)

It's a gentle process; you can rest assured that your pet doesn't feel any pain.

How to cope after losing a pet

Losing a pet is like losing a family member, and it's ok to grieve. Take as much time as you need to cry, feel your emotions and process them not being around. You'll find your house seems a little quieter, and your routines will change (you may not realise how much you did for them until they've passed!).

But have trust that they'll always be with you, and they'll forever hold a place in your heart – that you'll never lose.

There are specialised counsellors you can talk to if you need to who are experienced in the grief associated with losing your beloved fur baby.

Need someone to visit your pet or take them on a walk during the day?

How to look after your pet's teeth (and avoid bad breath!)

In the animal world, August is celebrated as 'Pet Dental Awareness Month'.

It's a great reminder that we need to give some attention to what's happening inside the mouths of our fur babies.

Dental disease is a common issue diagnosed by vets and can start as young as two years of age.

The good news is that you can do things at home to help prevent dental disease in your pet.

Having 6-monthly check-ups with your vet is also recommended. They're experts at spotting the early signs of dental disease, and as a dentist does for us, your vet can perform a scale and clean on your pet if needed.

Let's look deeper into dental disease and how you can help your pet.

How does dental disease affect my pet?

Think of your pet's mouth as the gateway to the rest of their body.

When their teeth and gums become infected (after bacteria has built up), this infection is prone to travel to other areas of their bodies.

Vets have found that dogs and cats with dental disease often progress to having heart, liver, or kidney disease, all of which can be prevented with proper dental care.

Animals are usually very good at hiding their pain, so it's up to us as pet owners to stay on top of their dental health.

The signs of dental disease to look out for

Take a look inside your pet's mouth. If they have any of the following, it may be a sign they're suffering from gum disease, so it's time to see a vet.

Bad breath (beyond the usual dog/cat breath)
Stains on their teeth
Red or bleeding gums (a sign of gingivitis)
More than usual saliva and drooling
Soreness around their jaw when you pat or touch them
Difficulty chewing their food (e.g., being turned off dry food)
Swelling around the jaw area
Rubbing their face

Top 5 ways you can help prevent dental disease occurring in your pet

Dental disease can be nasty and affect the lifestyle of your pet. But unlike many other diseases, it is preventable.

Once you know the importance of dental health in your pet, you'll find many things you can do at home to help prevent dental disease.

These include:

Brushing their teeth daily – you can buy pet toothbrushes and dental care products from pet shops or your local vet.
A daily dental chew stick – there are plenty on the market, and if you're unsure what to buy, ask your vet or look for natural products.
Swapping their food for a prescription dental diet – most of the top brands will have a dental care option.
Giving them a bone to gnaw on – make sure it's raw, meaty and not cut, or try chicken necks for small dogs or cats.
Feeding them cubes of raw meat like lamb hearts or gravy beef – this has plenty of connective tissue, which is excellent for pets who can't chew on a bone.

Does your dog need a coat for winter?

As a dog walker, owners often ask me if their dog needs a coat during the cooler winter months.

It's a great question but one that I can't give a definite answer to!

Even though we're feeling the colder air and rug up when we head outside for a walk, your dog may or may not feel the same.

To help you decide if your dog needs a winter coat, let's explore why some dogs love a coat and others don't.

Is a winter coat for a dog purely a fashion statement?

You may have seen some dogs in your local park looking like their owners have 'styled' their pooch! The dog is flaunting a beautiful winter coat as it trots along.

Pet fashion has boomed over the past few years, with many new pet parents treating their dogs as children and spending money on doggie fashion.

And this may leave you thinking, should my dog wear a winter coat? Even if it's just a plain one!

The answer depends on your dog's breed, size, age and coat.

Not all dogs will need a winter coat

When deciding if your dog needs a winter coat, you'll need to consider its breed, size, coat and age.

Dogs who benefit from a winter coat include:

Small or medium dogs with thin coats, such as Chihuahuas, Terriers, Dachshunds, etc.
Thin dogs such as Whippets or Greyhounds
Dogs that have been clipped short, such as Poodles
Older dogs, as they can't regulate their body temperature as well

Dogs who won't need a winter coat include:

Small or medium dogs with thick coats, such as Pomeranians or Chow Chows
Large dogs with thick coats, such as Huskies, Bernese Mountain Dogs, Collies, etc.

If you're unsure whether your dog needs a winter coat, ask your vet or local pet shop for advice.

When should my dog wear a winter coat?

Now you've decided if your dog needs a winter coat or not, you're probably wondering how often or when it'll need to wear it.

Generally, when your dog is inside, you'll have the heater or fire on, and your dog shouldn't need to wear its coat. However, if you notice it's shivering, you can put the coat on to help warm them up.

When your dog goes outside, wearing their jacket is always best, especially if it's raining.

If you head out for a walk, you can put your dog's jacket on to help keep the wind and rain off them. Watch them and feel their body during your walk, as you don't want your dog to overheat with the exercise and jacket combination.

How to choose a winter coat for your dog

You'll find many varieties of winter coats you can choose for your dog.

At a minimum, your dog's winter coat should protect its neck and belly and cover them comfortably from the base of its neck to its tail. Ensure that when you do it up (underneath), they can still go to the toilet!

Their winter coat should fit snuggly but not be too tight to restrict their natural movements or suffocate them as they lie down.

You'll find you can buy:

Knitted coats (not ideal for rain but cosy for inside or nighttime)
Waterproof coats (perfect for toilet breaks and walks)
Thick insulated coats (for icy, snowy areas).

If you're unsure about the size, most online stores will have measurements you can check against your dog. Most pet stores will also allow you to take your dog into the store and try on their various winter coats.
